Wynonna Earp Review: Holy War Part 2 (4×06)

It’s hard to believe that the mid-season finale of Wynonna Earp’s 4th season, Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 6, “Holy War Part 2” is already here. The wait for the season felt like a lifetime but the last six episodes have gone by in the blink of an eye

Wynonna Earp: Avatars and Champions

“Jolene” is both avatar and champion. It empathetically articulates our darkest thoughts and overwhelmed feelings but then reminds us that we are stronger than we know, offering an aspirational call to keep fighting for ourselves.

Feminist Frame

A social pariah with an infamous past, who uses alcohol to cope with the scars it left behind. She has a cynical exterior protecting a vulnerable core that still feels every blow inflicted by a world intent on breaking her. Forced to carry the burden and responsibility of her family’s legacy she is thrust into…… Continue reading Feminist Frame

Seeing Ourselves and Seeing Others

A couple weeks ago I had a conversation with some other Legends of Tomorrow fans about #Avalance and how much we loved what Caity Lotz and Jes Macallan were doing with their characters. It was one of many similar conversations I’ve had since that ship set sail (and many Sara specific conversations before that). As…… Continue reading Seeing Ourselves and Seeing Others

Scoring Wynonna Earp: An Interview With Peter Chapman & Robert Carli

Since season two of Wynonna Earp ended, I’ve spent a good deal of time looking at the different cinematic elements that work together to tell the stories of these characters: the soundtrack, acting, direction, cinematography, etc. One of the elements I’ve wanted to explore for a while is the show’s score but I wasn’t exactly…… Continue reading Scoring Wynonna Earp: An Interview With Peter Chapman & Robert Carli

Talent Spotlight: Dominique Provost-Chalkley

I didn’t know how hard I was going to fall in love with Waverly, how captivated I’d be by Elle, or how invested I’d be in Terri and Grace (from Neverknock). I just knew I was interested in seeing her story. But then with each episode, season and project Dominique seemed to keep getting better and her characters more compelling. Each time she showed up on my screen she brought something new and blew past the expectations she set the last time.

Unreal Reality: Wynonna Earp 2×06

A good show gives viewers scenes that they’re still talking about the next day, a great one longer than that. But an exceptional show? An exceptional show has the capacity to create moments that leave a mark and connect with the audience in ways that have meaning beyond the confines of the specific narrative it…… Continue reading Unreal Reality: Wynonna Earp 2×06

The Higgins Moments

Ask any Wynonna Earp fan what they love about the show and what makes it so special and you’ll hear plenty of gushing about Emily, the cast, and of course the Earper fandom. But what you’ll also hear is how much they love the music and how many new artists they’ve been introduced to through…… Continue reading The Higgins Moments

Sometimes Life Chooses For Us

“Wyatt Earp wanted to be a farmer. 30 seconds in the OK Corral, and a gunslinger he was made. Sometimes, life chooses for us.” This line from the Wynonna Earp pilot, said by Doc to Wynonna, came roaring back to me this week because replace a few details about farming and the OK Corral and it might as well have been said about Wynonna. In those 24 words, Doc previewed one of the central themes of the series, the tension between fate and choice. Realizing that we don’t have as much choice as we thought and doing the best we can to navigate the decisions life forces on us. It’s a theme this entire season, really the entire series, has explored in different ways.
